All Summer in the Sea

All Summer in the Sea
The Hair Diary
A journal that invites personal testimony tracing how hair holds memory, identity, and the evidence of a life in progress.

That summer I was in the water every day. Salt on salt on salt, the kind that builds up in the shaft and stays there long after you've rinsed, long after you've come home, long after the tan has faded and the season has folded itself away. My hair was stiff by July, bleached at the ends by August, and I didn't care — not really, not then. There is a particular freedom in letting your hair become evidence of where you've been: the sea, the sun, the afternoons that had no agenda. But September came, as it always does, with its cooler light and its quiet demand for return. And I found myself standing at the bathroom mirror, running my fingers through something that no longer felt like mine, wondering not how to fix it, but how to honour what it had been through while asking it, gently, to be soft again.
